Yes or no tarot: why card lists disagree, and how to read one
We compared six yes-or-no tarot lists on 7 Oct 2026. They agree on clear cards and split on The Moon, The Hanged Man, The Hermit and Justice — here is why, and how to use a pull for reflection.
There is no single yes-or-no meaning for each tarot card. Every yes/no list is somebody's editorial call, and when we lined up six of them on 7 October 2026 they agreed on the obvious cards and split on the quiet ones: The Moon, The Hanged Man, The Hermit, Justice and the Two of Swords. That split is useful. A yes or no tarot reading works best as a way to notice what you were hoping to hear, not as a verdict on what will happen.
Why this question, today
We checked Google Trends on 7 October 2026, about 08:55 Asia/Riyadh. No tarot story was breaking: the worldwide past-day list of rising tarot searches was empty, and the fastest risers related to "tarot" in the United States over the past week were birth-card searches, which we covered on 5 October. What stays high is the yes-or-no question:
- Over the past 30 days, worldwide, "yes or no tarot" averaged 37.5 on Trends' relative scale, against 16.6 for "moon tarot card", 16.7 for "hanged man tarot" and 15.3 for "death tarot card" in the same comparison.
- In the United States over the past 7 days, "online tarot reading yes or no" rose 80% among searches related to "tarot reading".
- "Yes no tarot", "tarot yes no" and "yes or no tarot" sit among the top related searches for "tarot" worldwide, over both the past day and the past week.
So today we explain one method, the yes-or-no pull, rather than chase a headline.
How a yes or no tarot reading usually works
The published guides describe three common ways to do it:
| Method | How it works | Where it is described |
|---|---|---|
| One card | Ask a closed question, draw one card, look up its yes, no or maybe lean | The basis of every list below |
| Three cards, majority | Draw three; if two or more lean yes, the answer is yes | Tarotap's guide |
| Reversals count | An upside-down card shifts the lean, usually towards no or maybe | yesnotarot.net, Tarotap |
Our own reading app has a yes-or-no topic, and each card page on this site shows a single Yes, No or Maybe lean — for example The Moon is marked No.
Six lists, six different decks
We counted the upright verdicts each list gives for all 78 cards. For our own site we checked all 78 card pages on 7 October.
| List | Yes | No | Maybe or other |
|---|---|---|---|
| PocketPlay card pages | 49 | 17 | 12 maybe |
| yesnotarot.net | 52 | 19 | 7 maybe |
| Tarotap | 51 | 17 | 10 maybe |
| Taro's Tarot | 51 | 12 | 15 maybe |
| So Tarot | 54 "leans yes" | 5 "leans no" | 10 "not yet", 9 "it depends" |
| Tarotologist | no totals given |
Two things stand out. Every list leans yes. yesnotarot.net puts it bluntly: "Roughly two in three cards will tell you what you want to hear." And the size of the no pile ranges from 5 to 19 cards, depending mostly on whether the list has a separate "not yet" box.
The cards the lists can't agree on
| Card (upright) | PocketPlay | yesnotarot.net | Tarotap | Taro's Tarot | Tarotologist | So Tarot |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Moon | No | No | No | Maybe | Maybe | Unclear |
| The Hanged Man | No | Maybe | Maybe | Maybe | Maybe | Not now |
| The Hermit | Maybe | No | Maybe | Maybe | Maybe | Not yet |
| Justice | Maybe | Maybe | Maybe | Yes | Yes | Yes, if you're honest |
| Wheel of Fortune | Yes | Yes | Yes | Maybe | Yes | Yes, timing not yours |
| Two of Swords | Maybe | Maybe | No | Maybe | Maybe | Unclear |
| Death | No | No | No | No | No | Not in its current form |
Death is the only card here with near agreement, and even it comes with a caveat (see below). The others split for reasons you can see in the pictures.
Why the lists disagree
1. They assume different questions. yesnotarot.net says its verdicts "assume you're asking whether something you want will happen or whether a plan will succeed." It adds that Death "is typically 'No' but could be 'Yes' for 'Should I end this chapter of my life?'" Tarotap gives a similar example for the Eight of Cups: no for "Should I stay in this relationship?", possibly yes for "Should I leave this job?" A card cannot have one lean if the question can point either way.
2. Some cards describe waiting, not an outcome. The Hanged Man hangs upside down; The Hermit stands alone with a lantern, lighting only the ground ahead; the woman in the Two of Swords is blindfolded with her swords crossed. None of those pictures says yes or no. They say "not decided yet." Lists that only have three boxes have to push them somewhere; So Tarot added "not yet" and "it depends" boxes instead.
3. The Moon is about missing information. Our card page lists its upright keywords as illusion, intuition, anxiety, dreams and uncertainty. yesnotarot.net calls it a No "for one practical reason": "acting on a Maybe feels a lot like acting on a Yes." Tarotologist reads the same fog as Maybe. Both are defensible. They are answering different worries.
4. Reversals change the balance. yesnotarot.net counted that, read reversed, its 78 cards give 58 No, 15 Maybe and 5 Yes, and argues that reversals "restore some honesty" to a deck that otherwise leans yes. If one list uses reversals and another doesn't, the same pull can give opposite answers.
A yes-or-no lean is a summary of a picture. When the lists disagree, look at the picture.
How to read one for reflection
You can still use the method. Use it to think, not to decide for you.
- Ask about your next step, not the outcome. "Should I message them this week?" works better than "Will they come back?" — the second asks the cards to know someone else's mind.
- Before you draw, write the answer you are hoping for. One word is enough.
- Draw one card and look at the image before any list. Ask: "What is the figure in this picture doing?" Waiting, leaving, celebrating, hiding?
- Then check the lean. If it is a split card from the table above, read that as information: the picture is about timing or uncertainty, not a verdict.
- Compare it with what you wrote. Relief or disappointment tells you more about what you want than the card does.
- Write one line you can act on. For example: "The Hanged Man — I am waiting for certainty that may not come. I'll decide by Friday with what I know."
Our journal-prompt guide turns that last line into a short entry. If your question really involves time — what led here, where it stands, what to try next — the past–present–future spread gives it more room than a single yes or no.
Common mix-ups
- "Maybe" is not a failed reading. So Tarot calls its "not yet" cards "the most useful group in practice", because they point to what is still unknown.
- Redrawing until you get yes. Tarotap's guide lists asking the same question again as its first mistake. If you redraw, notice that you wanted a different answer — that is the finding.
- Treating a list as the deck's rule. The lean on any card page, including ours, is an editor's summary. Different decks, traditions and readers will mark some cards differently.
- Reading reversed cards as plain opposites. Tarotap describes reversals as blocked energy, delays or something to address first, not simply the reverse.
What a yes or no pull is not
- Not a prediction. No list, including ours, can guarantee that something will or won't happen.
- Not a decision-maker for big choices. Use it to see your own leaning more clearly, then decide with real information.
- Not advice. Tarot here is for reflection. It is not medical, legal, financial or mental-health guidance. If a question is weighing on you heavily, talk to someone qualified or someone you trust.
